This
video clip, of a Welsh phone-salesman singing Puccini's "Nessun Dorma", is one of the more moving things I've seen. Apparently, he's been an international sensation for more than a year now, so you may already have seen it. If not, it's absolutely worth your time. (Watching Simon Cowell's smirk melt away into incredulity is the least of its pleasures.) I don't know how you can watch it without tearing up.

You're behind the curve on this, unless you're being sarcastic. There's now another sensation in the same vein -- a woman they found who sings a song from Les Miserables. I think the guy is a bit better (singing-wise), and I fear that now they're just going to do the same thing every year: search UK basements for some dowdy person with a remarkable talent. I guess that's better than the reverse, which is what we're usually barraged with. But still, I want Paul to remain special!
Yeah, I saw that piece in the Times about the woman. I realize that everybody's probably already seen Paul but me, but just in case, I put this up. I haven't watched that woman yet. Probably I'll wait until 2011 to do so.
